The Graduate Students Association of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese of Tulane University invites submissions for its 8th Annual Cultural Encounters Conference. The organizing committee will consider papers that explore issues of music, urban space, gender, and nation in all areas and periods of Iberian and Latin American culture, society, politics, language, literature, and criticism.To present a paper, please submit a 300 word abstract in Spanish, Portuguese, or English in addition to one separate page listing the following: Title of paper, your name, academic affiliation, address, and telephone number.Reading time of papers will be limited to 20 minutes. Registration fees are $20 for students and $30 for professors. The committee will respond by March 14, 2005. Abstracts may be submitted either electronically or by mail.

One More Crossroads: Don Quijote at Four Hundred

"One More Crossroads: Don Quijote at Four Hundred" is an international symposium in celebration of the quadricentennial of the publication of Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quijote de la Mancha (1605-2005). To be held at Boston University on April 14-16, 2005, the symposium will bring together prominent Cervantes scholars to speak about this masterpiece of world literature. The symposium will begin with an inaugural presentation and reception on Thursday evening, April 14, and will continue all day Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16. Speakers will be giving 45-50 minute presentations. On Friday and Saturday there will be round-table discussions during which the audience will be able to ask questions of the speakers.On the evening of Friday, April 15, there will be a special viewing of an exhibit of rare books related to Cervantes and his times from the world-renowned Ticknor Collection at the Boston Public Library. The viewing, open only to registered symposium participants, will be complemented with a reception and concert of Spanish music.On Saturday evening, April 16, there will be a banquet to celebrate the conclusion of the symposium.The Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, housed at the Mugar Memorial Library of Boston University, will also be organizing an exhibit of rare books from the Spanish Golden Age in collaboration with the symposium. Many of the featured books are from the Samuel Waxman Collection of Mugar Memorial Library.

Matoian Way.The birthday of ''Quixote'' author Cervantes will be celebrated April 11-12 with several presentations and displays:- The Cervantes Symposium from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the University Business Center. The Conference is dedicated to the dissemination of information regarding issues, methods, materials, and research concerning the development of Spanish language skills among individuals of Spanish-speaking backgrounds. The conference is open to community members, teachers of all levels (K-12, Adult Basic Education, Community College, University), and researchers who wish to share and learn about the unique challenges of instructing this diverse group oflanguage learners.Conference Co-Chairs Cecilia Rodríguez Pino and Patricia MacGregor-Mendoza seek submissions for the 11th Conference on Teaching Spanish to Native Speakers. Submissions are being requested for 30-minute paper sessions (20 minutes presentation 10 minutes discussion) and 2-hour workshop sessions (1.5 hours presentation, 5 hour discussion) and half-day workshops (3.5 hour presentation, 5 hour discussion). Topics may be drawn from any discipline, but should be broadly related to advancing knowledge of this growing field by identifying the unique social or linguistic characteristics of Native Spanish Speakers (e.g. issues in identity, social history, dialect, proficiency, etc.), developing pedagogical theory and/or implementing pedagogical techniques that address the specific needs of Spanishspeakers.Paper submissions: submit one copy of a one-page abstract that includes the title, an outline of the focus of the paper and the audience for which your presentation is intended (elementary, secondary, post-secondary, adult education, community, etc.).
